WTF Is Heating My Mac? and WTF Is Heating My PC? keep monitoring data on your computer by default. Signing in and cloud backup are optional. Cloud features described below apply to versions that offer them.

Local monitoring

The app measures resource use and keeps recent process history, collection records and battery history locally. It does not read your documents, chats or source code. Local monitoring works without an account. Optional update checks fetch a public release file.

Basic app usage statistics are a separate option and are off by default. If enabled, they include a random installation ID, app version and day used. They do not include measurements, process names, projects, files or achievements. Turning this option off stops reporting and requests deletion of that installation’s usage history. Usage records are retained for 90 days.

Licenses and sign-in

The licensing service stores your purchase email, license status, activation dates, a random installation ID and a public device key to start trials, activate licenses and manage device seats. It does not use your MAC address or serial number. Stripe handles payments; we do not receive your full payment-card details.

If you choose to sign in, Neon Auth handles authentication. Google sign-in provides your account identifier, email, name and profile picture for authentication and account identification. We request only basic sign-in permissions, with no access to Gmail, Drive or Calendar. Email sign-in uses a one-time code delivered through Resend, which processes the recipient address and message to deliver it.

A license can be linked to one account. Knowing or sharing a license key does not give another account access to your history. Each computer keeps its own archive.

Optional private cloud backup

Signing in does not turn backup on. When you enable it, the service stores your collection, records, daily summaries, battery history, observed app and process names, and CPU and memory measurements. It also stores your platform, logical core count, RAM capacity and available app versions. Backup excludes project paths, command arguments, documents, chats, source code and disk inventories.

Your account owns your archive. Backups are retained until you delete them or request account deletion. You can import existing local data; previously expired local history cannot be recovered. Turning backup off stops further uploads and leaves your existing archive available.

Optional shared statistics

You can choose “Backup only” or “Backup + shared statistics”. Both offer the same private backup. The statistics option uses observed app measurements to calculate aggregate resource use. Raw contributions remain linked to your account during processing; they are not anonymous. Published groups require at least 20 participating accounts and do not reveal individual device histories. These measurements describe running apps, not attention or active use.

You can change this choice at any time. Choosing private backup or turning backup off removes that device’s contributions from the statistics database without deleting its private archive. We do not sell individual app inventories or use them for advertising.

Exporting and deleting data

You can export a selected period from your archive and delete a device’s cloud archive from your account. Deleting an archive also stops that device’s backup and removes its shared-statistics contributions. Retiring a computer releases its license seat and revokes its cloud access while keeping its archive; retired devices do not use an active seat. These actions do not erase files on the computer.

Disconnecting the app leaves local history intact. To request account deletion, access or corrections, contact the operator below. Deleted data can remain temporarily in provider recovery backups according to their retention settings; those copies are not used for app access or statistics.

Feedback and support

Feedback contains the message you submit, an optional reply email, your platform and the app and operating-system versions shown in the form. It is private to support. We retain it while handling the request and for up to 12 months after closure.

Website and service providers

This website has no advertising trackers or analytics scripts. Download links count requests, not people or completed installations. Hosting providers receive ordinary connection information such as IP addresses. Authentication uses cookies to maintain your signed-in session.

Vercel hosts the website and licensing service. Neon processes hosted account and backup data; the application database is in EU Frankfurt. Neon Auth provides authentication, with Google used only when you choose Google sign-in. Resend delivers authentication emails through its Ireland sending region. These providers process data needed to operate their services under their applicable terms and retention settings; a database or sending region is not a promise that every provider operation occurs only within that region.

We use account, license and backup information to provide the service you request and protect its operation. Participation in shared statistics and basic usage reporting is based on your separate optional choices.
